So I am a little late to the party but at least I am here. When I first heard about “Kpop Demon Hunters”, I was skeptical. Weren’t we all? I ended up watching it with a friend after a lot of convincing. Am I glad that I did! The first thing that caught my attention was the stunning visuals, the animation style and then the music.

A Sony Pictures Animation’s masterpiece, the Kpop Demon Hunters has left its mark on the world. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, this Kpop infused animation is easily rubbing shoulders with the giants in the animation world (winks at Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs Machines). Trust me, be ready to edit your all time favourite list.
The Plot: K-Pop Girls Who Slay Demons, Literally
Exactly that. Three kpop superstars use their music to protect the human world from the demon king Gwi-Ma, and his evil army. Sounds like Totally Spies or Powerpuff Girls. They do this by using their songs to strengthen the Honmoon -a supernatural barrier that keeps the demons from running amok in the human world. But what happens when Gwi-Ma sends a rival kpop boy band? Demons pretending to be a boy band. Yhup! It’s a literal race for the fans as they’re slowly inching towards the very hot boy band. Pretending may be a wrong word since they used to be human and can actually sing.
Why The Animation Stands Out
K-pop Demon hunters is fun – I mean Koop meets mystical action, but it’s so much more. It has a little of everything. There are humourous moments and laugh-out scenes that will have you holding your sides. But there are raw unfiltered moments filled with real emotions that will have you in your feelings – you witness firsthand the feelings of self-doubt, guilt and insecurity. These might have you pause to reflect on yourself for a second.

The animation showed the pressures of being in the limelight -as the girls constantly had to be perfect but still show their humanity. Their constant need to eat snacks, relax in comfy clothes and just be on their couch but they barely did that because duty kept calling. They had to remain perfect, slay Demons and still come up with good songs to stay relevant in the music industry. Talk about pressure. The juggling of all these made them human and relatable. Minus the music part.
The visuals will keep you at the edge of your seat. The soundtracks are fire, they’ll be on repeat in your head long after the animation is over. Whether or not you’re a kpop fan, there’s a song to keep you addicted. The songs are topping the song charts effortlessly. The fight scenes were synced perfectly with the songs, making the demon slaying more like music videos.
Huntrix – K-pop Demon Hunters
Everyone knows Huntrix as the global superstars with heavenly voices and synchronized moves. On the side, they’re elite demon hunters chosen to keep the Honmoon safe. Each member wields a unique weapon with which they keep the demons at bay.

The Saja Boys: The K-Pop Grim Reapers You’ll Love to Hate
Let’s talk about the Saja Boys—the demon K-pop idols who take the rivalry up a notch. I’m aware they’re the enemy but can we agree on how cute they look? Their name “Saja” is an amazing wordplay on the word for Grim Reaper ((jeoseung saja), a word that translates as a being that guides deceased souls into the afterlife.

Their whole aura is built on that; as we see them draped in the traditional Grim Reaper outfit – long black robes with a black hat. The Saja Boys were intent on reaping souls for Gwi Ma but we were drawn in by their looks. They were seriously oozing danger and we were busy fangirling over them (don’t feel bad. I was too).
Similarities And Differences Between Rumi and Jinx
Maybe, it’s just me. I couldn’t place why Rumi seemed so familiar till her demon side popped out. Then it clicked. She reminded me of Jinx, and it wasn’t just because of the hair. Both are fierce and emotionally scarred women trying to keep it all together. Rumi’s fighting style is fuelled by self loathe. Her emotions are volatile and her story is heartbreaking. Just like Jinx.
There are very distinct differences between the duo. While Rumi is a hero, fighting actively to keep the world from falling into Gwi Ma’s hands, Jinx is an anti-hero (villain wouldn’t be accurate), who causes chaos and destruction. Jinx’s relationship with her sister Vi and adoptive father Silco is very complicated. However, with Rumi and her fellow band mates, we see something deeper. While Jinx is more impulsive, Rumi tends to be cautious and keeps her eyes on her end goal.
Final Thoughts
Kpop Demon Hunters is a great animated movie designed to keep you obsessed (cue the Saja Boys). I can’t stress this enough: You will be obsessed with the music. In the words of Scar, ‘Be prepared!’.
