Accra’s game development and interactive arts community is set to welcome a unique creative experience as Playful Obscura 2026 officially opens. The residency, part of the GamesConnect AFRICA Initiative by Goethe-Institut Sub-Saharan Africa, is designed to support experimental, culturally rooted approaches to game design, storytelling, and digital art.
Unlike traditional game programs, Playful Obscura focuses on the intersection of art and interactivity—encouraging creators to push boundaries, explore identity, and develop meaningful narratives through games and immersive media.
Spotlight on the 2026 Residents

This year’s residency brings together two talented creatives from across the continent:
Jamil Osmar Ramos (Angola) and Mame Faty Kane (Senegal) have been selected to develop original projects that reflect their artistic perspectives and cultural influences. At the opening event, both residents will introduce their creative directions and share early insights into the work they will be building throughout the residency.
Their projects are expected to explore new forms of expression within games, blending storytelling, sound, visuals, and interaction in ways that challenge conventional formats.
A Call to Ghana’s Creative Community
Beyond showcasing talent, Playful Obscura is deeply collaborative. The residency actively invites participation from Ghana’s growing creative ecosystem.
Game developers, programmers, musicians, drummers, sound designers, writers, animators, and digital artists are encouraged to contribute their skills as the residents’ projects evolve. This open approach creates opportunities for knowledge exchange, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and real-world creative involvement.
Expanding Access: The Library of Things – VR Workshop Edition
A key highlight of the opening event will be the soft launch of the Library of Things: VR Workshop Edition. This initiative introduces an expanded resource hub dedicated to virtual reality experimentation and immersive prototyping.
By making tools and equipment more accessible, the program aims to lower barriers for creators interested in exploring VR and interactive storytelling—further strengthening Ghana’s position within Africa’s digital arts landscape.
Building Community Through Games
The event will go beyond presentations. Attendees can expect an interactive and relaxed environment featuring gameplay sessions, networking opportunities, and conversations with fellow creatives.
It’s a space designed not just to showcase ideas, but to spark connections—bringing together artists, developers, and enthusiasts who are shaping the future of games in Africa.
