PlayStation’s Shift to a Digital-Only Future killing of Discs completely

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that it will discontinue the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation game releases beginning January 2028, marking one of the biggest shifts in the history of the PlayStation brand.
After the transition takes effect, all newly released PlayStation games will be available exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers offering digital game codes. The change will not affect games released before January 2028, meaning existing physical disc titles will continue to be supported.

According to Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the decision reflects the growing demand for digital gaming.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”
Shuman also emphasized that Sony will continue investing in new ways for players to access games while maintaining flexibility in where they purchase digital titles.

“We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.”
The announcement reflects a broader industry trend toward digital distribution, with more gamers choosing to download titles rather than purchase physical copies. While the move is expected to streamline game distribution and reduce production costs, it is also likely to spark debate among collectors and players who value physical ownership, game preservation, and the second-hand market.
With this decision, Sony becomes the first major console manufacturer to commit to ending physical releases for all new games, signaling a significant step toward an all-digital future for the PlayStation ecosystem.
