Ghana’s growing video game development scene is getting another opportunity to shine as the MTN Game Developer Contest 2026, part of DigiFest 2026, calls on aspiring and established developers to create, submit and present their original game projects.

The competition is designed to identify emerging game development talent in Ghana, offering participants an opportunity to showcase their work, receive feedback from industry professionals and compete for recognition and further development opportunities.

With the contest scheduled to close on 19 October 2026, developers interested in participating will need to move quickly to complete their registrations and prepare their projects for submission.

Who Can Participate?

The contest is open to two main categories of participants:

  • University Category: Students from universities and tertiary institutions in Ghana.
  • Community Category: Independent developers, game development teams, studios and members of Ghana’s game development communities.

Participants can enter individually or form a team of up to three members. This creates an opportunity for solo developers and small teams to compete while demonstrating their technical abilities, creativity and understanding of game design.

For developers who have been experimenting with game engines, learning programming or building their first playable projects, the contest presents an opportunity to move beyond personal projects and put their work before a judging panel.

How to Join the MTN Game Developer Contest 2026

The organisers have outlined four key stages for prospective participants.

1. Register for the Contest

Interested developers must complete their participant and project registration through the official online registration form.

Participants should select the appropriate category and provide the required information about themselves, their teams and their proposed game projects.

2. Build an Original Game

Participants are expected to develop an original game project that demonstrates their creativity and technical abilities.

Developers can work individually or in teams of up to three people. The focus is on bringing a game concept to life and producing a project that can be demonstrated and evaluated.

For aspiring developers, this means the competition is an opportunity to demonstrate practical skills rather than simply present an idea for a game.

3. Submit Your Source Code

Once the game is ready, participants must submit their projects through the designated submission platform.

According to the contest guidelines, submission materials may include the game title and description, a playable build or project access link, source code or repository access where required, screenshots or demonstration videos, development documentation and information about team contributions.

Developers should ensure their repositories and project files are accessible to the organisers and that their submissions meet the stated requirements.

4. Defend Your Game

The final stage is the project audition and defence.

The organisers plan to shortlist 10 projects, comprising five from the University Category and five from the Community Category.

Shortlisted participants will be invited to an in-person presentation at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where they will demonstrate their games and explain their development processes before a panel of judges.

Participants should be prepared to discuss their game concepts, gameplay mechanics, development tools, technical implementation, originality and the contributions of individual team members. They may also be asked about their plans for improving and developing their games further.

What Will the Judges Be Looking For?

The competition’s evaluation process focuses on three major areas.

User Interface and User Experience: Judges will assess the game’s visual presentation, navigation, accessibility, responsiveness and overall player experience.

Code Quality: Technical considerations include code organisation, performance, stability, maintainability and evidence of original development work.

Content and Game Experience: The judges will also consider the game’s concept, creativity, originality, completeness, target audience and potential for future development and commercialisation.

These criteria highlight an important point for participants: a promising game idea alone may not be enough. Developers will need to demonstrate how well their projects work, how thoughtfully they have been designed and what potential they hold beyond the competition.

What Can Participants Win?

The contest includes recognition for the strongest projects across both categories, alongside an overall grand prize for the best project.

The top three projects in the University Category and the top three in the Community Category will also receive recognition.

Beyond the awards, the overall winning project may have the opportunity to receive additional support to help take the game further.

According to the published contest guidelines, this support may include technical mentorship, training, product development guidance, UI/UX improvements, code optimisation, quality assurance, testing, platform integration and preparation for hosting or deployment.

The winning project may also be considered for hosting or publication on a designated platform, subject to the necessary approvals.

For developers hoping to transform a prototype into a more complete product, these opportunities could be particularly valuable.

Another Opportunity for Ghana’s Growing Game Development Scene

The contest arrives at a time when Ghana’s gaming ecosystem is attracting greater attention through industry events, partnerships and initiatives focused on developing local talent.

The recent MTN Gaming Conference 2026 in Accra brought together stakeholders from across the gaming industry to discuss opportunities in game development, esports, mobile entertainment and Africa’s wider creative economy.

Initiatives such as the MTN Game Developer Contest 2026 can help connect that industry-level conversation with the developers working on projects in classrooms, homes, independent studios and local development communities.

For Ghanaian developers, the opportunity is not simply about winning a competition. It is also about demonstrating what local talent can create, learning from professional feedback and exploring how original games can progress towards wider audiences.

However, participants will need to pay attention to the submission requirements, ensure their projects are ready for evaluation and prepare to explain the decisions behind their work.

Registration Is Open: Take the Challenge

The MTN Game Developer Contest 2026 is an opportunity for Ghanaian university students, independent developers and small development teams to put their skills to the test.

Whether you are working on your first serious game project or developing an original concept with a small team, the four stages provide a clear path from registration to the final presentation.

The published contest closing date is 19 October 2026. Developers interested in participating should consult the official contest guidelines and complete their registration and submission requirements promptly.
