Dragon Quest series composer Koichi Sugiyama passed away on September 30 due to septic shock, the official Dragon Quest blog reported. He was 90 years old.
Sugiyama—the oldest video game composer, according to Guinness World Records—composed more than 500 songs for the Dragon Quest series, starting with the original game in 1986. His final job was to compose the music for the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.
Funeral services for Sugiyama were held by close family and friends. Square Enix plans to hold a memorial gathering for Sugiyama at some point in the future, but a date has yet to be decided.
