For next year’s Comic Con Africa which is in South Africa, organisers have added a new event to the lineup with the announcement of the inaugural South African Gaming Awards.
Details for the event are thin on the ground at this stage, with the scope of the Awards unknown at this stage. As such, it’s unclear whether the South African Gaming Awards will only be looking at locally developed titles, or include the AAA internationally released games of 2019 as well.
Hopefully there is a distinct South African angle to the Awards.
“The South Africa Gaming Awards is set to become a key feature of Comic Con Africa and has been established to celebrate individuals, teams, developers, streamers, journalists and the like in the gaming industry,” reads a press release about the announcement.
If that is true, there should be a good deal of local content, creators and gamers that could be highlighted.
“On the back of the roaring success of the inaugural Comic Con Africa earlier this year we came to the realisation that there is no platform of this nature on the African continent where those who are excelling in the gaming industry have an opportunity to be acknowledged. We want to bring peers and like-minded individuals together to celebrate this industry and build this community across the board,” adds Carol Weaving, MD of organisers Reed Exhibitions.
At this stage there is no date or criteria mentioned for applications for the South African Game Awards, but Reed Exhibitions says that more information will be forthcoming in the new year.
