Microsoft’s gaming division is entering a new era following the retirement of longtime gaming leader Phil Spencer and the departure of Xbox president Sarah Bond. The announcement marks one of the biggest leadership transitions in Company history.

Phil Spencer officially retired on February 23, ending an incredible 38-year career at Microsoft, including 12 years as the head of Microsoft Gaming. During his leadership, Spencer helped reshape Xbox into a global gaming powerhouse, expanding its reach across console, PC, mobile, and cloud gaming.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella praised Spencer’s contributions, highlighting his role in growing the gaming business significantly and leading key acquisitions such as Activision Blizzard, Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax, and Mojang, the creators of Minecraft. These moves strengthened Microsoft’s position as one of the biggest publishers in the world.

Stepping into the top role is Asha Sharma, formerly the president of Microsoft’s CoreAI product division. Sharma brings extensive experience in building large-scale consumer platforms, having previously worked in senior roles at Instacart and Meta.

Sharma expressed both gratitude and determination as she begins her leadership, emphasizing her commitment to protecting what makes Xbox special while preparing it for the future. She made it clear that delivering high-quality games will remain the company’s top priority.

She also outlined three key focus areas moving forward:

  • Creating great games that players love
  • Renewing Xbox’s connection with its core fanbase, especially console players
  • Developing new ways to play and expanding gaming across devices

Sharma stressed that Xbox will continue investing in its studios, iconic franchises, and innovative ideas while adapting to changes in technology and the gaming landscape.

Matt Booty Promoted to Chief Content Officer

Alongside Sharma’s appointment, Matt Booty, previously head of Xbox Game Studios, has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer. Booty will oversee Microsoft’s massive network of nearly 40 game studios, including teams behind major franchises like Halo, Call of Duty, The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Fallout, and Candy Crush.

Booty said his focus will be on supporting developers and ensuring teams have the tools and environment needed to continue delivering outstanding gaming experiences.

Sarah Bond Also Leaves Microsoft

In addition to Spencer’s retirement, Xbox president and COO Sarah Bond has resigned. Bond played a major role in expanding Xbox Game Pass, advancing cloud gaming, and helping shape the company’s modern platform strategy.

Spencer thanked Bond for her leadership and contributions during a critical period of growth for Xbox.

Phil Spencer Reflects on His Legacy

In his farewell message, Spencer reflected on his journey, which began as a Microsoft intern in 1988. He described his time at Xbox as a privilege and expressed pride in helping build a community that connects millions of players worldwide.

Spencer will remain in an advisory role temporarily to ensure a smooth transition but is now stepping away to begin the next chapter of his life.

Microsoft’s gaming division currently reaches over 500 million monthly active users, making it one of the largest gaming platforms globally. With Asha Sharma now leading the division and Matt Booty overseeing content, Microsoft is positioning itself for continued growth.
